Championship winning goalkeeper joins Coventry City on emergency loan

Coventry City have announced the signing of goalkeeper David Stockdale on an emergency loan deal from Championship side Birmingham City.

Coventry City announced the arrival of goalkeeper David Stockdale on loan from Championship side Birmingham City on Friday afternoon, via their club website. Stockdale will stay with Coventry for just seven days, with Sky Blues goalkeepers Lee Burge and Liam O’Brien unavailable for selection due to injury.

After winning promotion to the Premier League with Brighton in the 2016/17 season, Stockdale opted to stay in the Championship and joined Birmingham City in the summer of 2017.

However, since arriving at St Andrew’s, the 33-year-old hasn’t made the same impact as he did at the AMEX Stadium with Brighton. He made 36 appearances last season but has dropped out the first team in the new campaign. He has already been sent out on two emergency loan spells this season. He first joined Southend United for a short spell, before joining Wycombe Wanderers as well.

Stockdale is yet to feature for Birmingham this season, with Lee Camp in between the sticks as Garry Monk’s number one goalkeeper choice. He has not made the matchday squad once this season, with youngster Connal Trueman starting the first two league games and providing cover off the bench for Camp.

Now, former England youth international Stockdale has joined his third club on an emergency loan of the season. He is expected to return to St Andrew’s next week unless Coventry try to extend his deal beyond then to provide further cover.
