Promising non-league youngster impresses on trial with Leeds United

Matlock Town youngster Ashton Hall has been training with Leeds United’s Under-23’s recently, impressing in a behind closed doors game between Leeds’ Under-18s and Shrewsbury Town.

Leeds United have taken young defender Ashton Hall on trial from Evo-Stik Premier League side Matlock Town.

The non-league side posted the news on their club website on Wednesday morning.

The 18-year-old has been training with the club’s Under-23s over the past week after an impressive breakthrough campaign with Matlock. Hall played in a friendly with United’s Under-18s last night, impressing in the back line against Shrewsbury Town.

Matlock Town manager Dave Frecklington was in attendance at Tuesday night’s game to see how his youngster fared, and he was left thoroughly impressed by Hall’s performance.

“He was excellent, outstanding, playing on the right of a back three in the first half and on the right of a back four in the second half,” Frecklington said.

“He’d gone into the game off the cuff with just one training session with Leeds so to step up and play so well with a totally new group of people was brilliant.”

Hall could join up with the Whites’ youth sides if he builds on his impressive performance on Tuesday night. Manager Marcelo Bielsa has shown faith in his young stars since his arrival at Elland Road. Winger Jack Clarke has played in 15 Championship games so far this season, featuring in each of the last 12 matches.

19-year-old Jamie Shackleton has also played regularly this season. Shackleton has made 14 appearances in the league this season, filling in at right-back in the absence of Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi.
