Macclesfield Town looking at ex-Manchester City defender

Macclesfield Town are looking at defender Ellis Plummer as Sol Campbell targets defensive reinforcements.

The Silkmen want to stop leaking goals and see the 24-year-old as a potential free transfer signing, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Campbell’s side are currently 23rd in League Two and two points from safety.

Plummer has been a free agent since being released by Scottish Premiership side Motherwell at the end of last season and has been weighing up his options ever since.

The centre-back started out as a youngster at Stockport County before joining Manchester City at the age of 11. He played for City youth’s side but never managed to force himself into their first-team plans.

He was tipped for a big future by Man City and represented England at both Under-16 and Under-17 level.

Plummer gained his first taste of senior football experience on loan at Oldham Athletic in the 2013/14 season. He played four times for the Latics in League One.

He was then loaned out to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren for the 2014/15 campaign and played seven games for the Buddies in all competitions.

Plummer was then released by City at the end of the 2016/17 and moved back to Scotland to join Motherwell on a one-year deal. However, injuries affected his time at Fir Park and he only made two appearances.

If he is kept fit, Plummer could be a useful acquisition for Macclesfield. It is obvious they need to tighten up their defence or they will be back in the National League next season.
