Three Free Agents that Championship clubs could take a gamble on

Plenty of Championship clubs will feel aggrieved to have not got more business done this January transfer window, and may look to the free agent market in a bid to get more players through the door.

Here are three free agents that Championship clubs could still take a gamble on now that the window has closed.

Ibrahim Afellay

Having been released from Stoke City this week, Ibrahim Afellay is now without a club. The 32-year old’s contract was terminated by mutual consent after several injuries have halted any consistency in terms of performances and minutes out on the pitch.

The former-Barcelona attacking midfielder could be useful to a side hoping for some attacking flair and creativity.

Jordan Mutch

Still only 27, Mutch has played for several clubs in England’s top two divisions and was attracting Cardiff City early in the window. Another club interested was Gyeongnam in South Korea, but nothing came to fruition and the midfielder is still a free agent.

Efe Ambrose

Once on the books at Celtic, and part of the famous side that beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League back in 2012, Ambrose has been plying his trade with Hibernian for the past couple of seasons.

Having exercised a clause in his contract to leave Hibbs this January, the SPL club offered him a return before retracting the same offer soon after.

An athletic and strong centre-back, Ambrose could be a good fit for several Championship clubs, and won’t be a high earner in terms of weekly wages.
