Middlesbrough join Stoke in race to sign highly-rated Scotland international

Middlesbrough have joined Stoke in the pursuit of Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna, according to The Scottish Sun, with both clubs having made a £5 million bid for the Scotland international.

The report suggests Aberdeen have rejected both bids from Middlesbrough and Stoke respectively and are holding out for a higher transfer fee closer to £10 million. Earlier in the summer, bids for McKenna from Celtic and Aston Villa were also turned away, with the figures believed to both be £6 million.

Stoke may have cooled their interest however, with the signing of Danny Batth from Wolves earlier this week. The Championship winning captain spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Middlesbrough, and with one centre-half out the door, the Teessiders could be dipping into the market before the Thursday deadline.

McKenna has been attracting plenty of attention as he has excelled to a top defender in the Scottish Premier League in recent years, and earned his first international call up in 2018 as a result, where he is now valued as an important member of the squad.

It is also reported Middlesbrough and Stoke could again test Aberdeen’s resolve by coming back with another bid for the Scotsman before the 11pm deadline this evening. Both sides are looking to bolster their defensive options before the window slams shut.

Manager Derek McInnes has spoken out about McKenna, claiming he is good enough to sign for a Premier League side, and could be holding out for a bid from the English top flight.
