Blackburn Rovers trio feature in Championship Team of the Week #29

A fourth consecutive league victory for Blackburn Rovers has moved them up to eighth place in the Sky Bet Championship table, beating Hull City 3-0 at Ewood Park.

Seven places above and 14 points clear of Blackburn are league leaders Leeds United, who extended their lead at the top of the table to three points with a 2-1 victory over Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

With two of Leeds’ closest title-chasing rivals Norwich City and Sheffield United drawing 2-2 at Carrow Road, Marcelo Bielsa’s side made the most of two of the chasing pack dropping points.

Bottom-placed side Ipswich Town fell to a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park, despite an impressive showing from their goalkeeper.

On Tuesday evening, Reading held fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers to a 1-1 draw at the University of Bolton Stadium, whilst Swansea City and Birmingham City played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in South Wales.

With only eight matches taking place this week due to some Championship sides’ involvement in the FA Cup, here is who made our Championship Team of the Week, based on WhoScored.com’s match ratings.

Formation: 3-5-2

Goalkeeper: Bartosz Bialkowski (Ipswich Town) 8.87

Despite conceding twice during a defeat to Dean Smith’s Villa side, goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski excelled for the Tractor Boys.

The Polish goalkeeper is yet to keep a Championship clean sheet this season, but his 11 saves prevented Villa from winning by a more comfortable and more deserved margin.

Centre-back: Elliott Bennett (Blackburn Rovers) 7.90

Featuring as one of two makeshift centre-backs in our side is Rovers’ full-back, Elliott Bennett, helping Blackburn to a clean sheet and to a convincing victory over Hull.

Bennett won the most tackles (five), completed two dribbles and made three interceptions against the Tigers, condemning them to their first league defeat since November.

Elliott Bennett (left) spent four-and-a-half years with Norwich before joining Blackburn three years ago.

Centre-back: Jack Rodwell (Blackburn Rovers) 8.02

Scoring his first goal since September 2017 in Blackburn’s win was three-time England international, Jack Rodwell.

Rovers’ experienced Rodwell, who has 166 Premier League appearances to his name doubled Blackburn’s lead inside the opening 20 minutes and won three aerial duels against Hull.

Rodwell’s last career goal came whilst he was at Sunderland against Sheffield United 16 months ago.

Centre-back: Joe Mattock (Rotherham United) 8.02

Joe Mattock was on the end of a home defeat to league leaders Leeds but still impressed, although he was unable to prevent the Millers from dropping into the bottom three.

He won six aerial duels, completed four tackles, made seven clearances and six aerial duels; without his excellent display, Leeds may well have found this all-Yorkshire affair a lot more comfortable to clinch the three points in.

Right-midfield: Matty Cash (Nottingham Forest) 8.28

Martin O’Neill earned his first win as Nottingham Forest manager, beating Wigan Athletic 3-1 at the City Ground.

Winger Matty Cash got the hosts’ second goal of the clash early in the second half, as well as completing more dribbles than any other player (five).

Cash has scored eight goals in all competitions this season.

Centre-midfield: Alan Browne (Preston North End) 8.33

Opening the scoring during Preston North End’s 2-0 victory over Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium was Alan Browne.

As well as netting his 10th league goal of the season, Browne also won three aerial duels and completed two tackles to become only the 16th player in the Championship to reach double figures for goals this season.

Preston North End midfielder Alan Browne has reached 10 league goals for the first time this season.

Centre-midfield: Mateusz Klich (Leeds United) 8.86

Finishing with a match rating narrowly behind that managed by Ipswich stopper Bialkowski was Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich, who netted a second-half brace to extend the Whites’ advantage at the top of the table.

Doubling his tally to seven league goals to the season, Klich also completed three tackles and made two clearances, taking his combined total of league goals and assists for the campaign up to 13 (seven goals and six assists).

Leeds United has created two of Kemar Roofe’s 14 league goals this season.

Centre-midfield: Harrison Reed (Blackburn Rovers) 8.32

Providing a dab hand in the latter two of Blackburn’s goals was Harrison Reed, who was named as WhoScored’s star man.

He created Rodwell’s goal in the first half, before scoring himself to earn a fourth straight league win for Tony Mowbray’s side.

Left-midfield: Joe Lolley (Nottingham Forest) 8.68

Whilst Cash’s class inspired Forest down the right flank, Joe Lolley’s left-sided excellence saw him win the star man award.

Lolley marked his 50th appearance for the club with the opening goal, his first since November and he also completed four dribbles and four key passes, more than any player from either side.

Striker: Tammy Abraham (Aston Villa) 8.77

Tammy Abraham continued his run of goalscoring form in the Championship, netting both of Villa’s goals in their victory.

Having opened the scoring in the sixth minute in the West Midlands, Abraham doubled the hosts’ advantage just after the hour mark, taking his tally for the season up to 19 goals in the league in 23 appearances and making him the league’s top goalscorer.

Tammy Abraham’s goal per minute ratio in the Championship this season of a goal every 104 minutes is much better than his stellar 2016/17 campaign with Bristol City (149).

Striker: Oliver McBurnie (Swansea City) 9.10

Completing our side and taking the Player of the Week is Swansea striker Oliver McBurnie, who was heavily involved in all three of their goals at home to Birmingham.

The 22-year-old created Daniel James’ first-half goal, before netting twice in the final 30 minutes, the second of which came in stoppage time. He has now reached 15 goals in all competitions this season, seven of which have come in his past four appearances.

McBurnie has scored 13 Championship goals this season and his double on Saturday helped to fire Swansea into round five of the FA Cup.
