Reading defender set for Sporting Lisbon switch

Reading defender Tiago Ilori is set to join Sporting Lisbon, as per a report by the Swindon Advertiser.

The 25-year-old is having a medical ahead of a move back to his former club.

Illori, who has represented Portugal at youth levels from Under-18 to Under-23 in the past, joined Reading in July 2017 from Liverpool for a fee of £3.75 million. He helped the Royals get to the Championship Play-Off final in his first season at the club.

The Portuguese defender has played a total of 64 games for Reading since his move there but is now set for a new chapter of his career back at Sporting Lisbon.

Ilori started his career with Sporting and went onto break into their first-team as a youngster. He was snapped up by Liverpool in September 2013 for £7 million and played three times for their senior side during his time at Anfield.

He had loan spells at Granada, Bordeaux and Aston Villa before Liverpool decided to sell him to the Royals.

Reading are currently in the relegation zone in the Championship and have been busy in this transfer window. Their new manager, Jose Gomes, has delved into the market to sign Lewis Baker and Matt Miazga from Chelsea, Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool, Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal and Nelson Oliviera from Norwich City, in the hope they can stay up at the end of the campaign.

Perhaps Miazga is seen as a replacement for Ilori. The 23-year-old defender has spent time on loan at Vitesse and Nantes in the past from Chelsea.
