Stoke City set sights on Barnsley and Wolves defenders

Stoke City are looking at potential deals for Barnsley and Wolves defenders Liam Lindsay and Danny Batth, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The Potters have been heavily linked with a move for Portsmouth defender Matthew Clarke but will have to turn to other options now with Pompey’s asking price too high.

Nathan Jones is keen to bring in a new central defender before the transfer window shuts to help tighten up his newly inherited defensive backline.

Liam Lindsay, who is 23 years-old, has emerged as a target for the Championship side. He moved to Barnsley at the start of last season from Scottish Premiership side Partick Thistle and has since become a key player for the Tykes.

The Scot couldn’t prevent the Yorkshire side from relegation to League One in the last campaign but has impressed in League One this season with some solid performances.

Danny Batth is another name being mentioned for Stoke. The experienced defender is currently on loan at Middlesbrough from Premier League side Wolves. He has played 13 games in all competitions for Boro since his move there in the summer.

The 28-year-old has played over 300 games in his career and is more of an experienced option over Lindsay for Jones. With him currently out on loan at Boro, perhaps this is a more long-term target for Stoke and one they may pursue in the future.

It is obvious that they need another central defender now after their 2-0 loss at home to Preston yesterday. It will be interesting to see who they opt for.
