Leeds United wing target interest – not straightforward

Leeds United have brought in one player so far in January, signing Real Madrid stopper Kiko Casilla. They have irons in the fire for Swansea’s Daniel James too. But now there’s interest elsewhere.

According to The Sun’s Mike McGrath, the Whites are readying to “launch [a] swoop for Wolves winger Ivan Cavaleiro” in order to “boost Premier League promotion hopes.

As stories go, all involving Leeds United are ‘big’ stories, such is the voracious appetite their fans have for club news. A ‘scoop’ like this is bound to ramp up the interest of fans desperate for players to be brought in during this window.

Cavaleiro would be a sure-fire signing for the Whites, one who’d give United that boost that they definitely need to take them over the line. He’s featured in 13 Premier League games this season for Wolves, scoring against Southampton, Arsenal and Bournemouth.

Since his £7.2m transfer to Molineux, Cavaleiro has shown more than glimpses of his potential. The multi-capped Portuguese youth international, who also has two full Portugal caps, has scored 17 goals and provided 19 assists in 93 games for the Black Country side.

However, as the Express and Star’s columnist Tim Spiers says on Twitter (below), there’s more smoke than mirrors about this deal.

The thing is, as much as Leeds United fans would be excused over getting excited about Cavaleiro joining the Whites, it really would be better that they sit down and take stock of the situation.

The left-wing flyer is getting exposure in the Premier League, albeit only 506 minutes over 14 appearances. This is the finest domestic league in world football, he’s not likely to want to step away – it seems that Wolves don’t want him to anyway.

Still, the Whites are in pursuit of Swansea flyer Daniel James, a player who Marcelo Bielsa rates very highly. There’s less than a week left of the January window; it will be interesting to see how that one plays out.
