Wigan Athletic continuing pursuit of Nottingham Forest defender

Wigan Athletic are still keen on signing Nottingham Forest defender Danny Fox, according to BBC Sport.

The Latics are wanting to bolster their defence before the end of the January transfer window.

Fox’s contract at Forest expires at the end of the season meaning Paul Cook’s side could lure him away from the City Ground.

The new Reds’ boss, Martin O’Neill, has confirmed their interest in the veteran defender by telling BBC Nottingham Sport: “There is genuine interest from Wigan”.

Fox is a vastly experienced defender and has played over 450 games in his career. This know-how would come in handy for the Latics and Cook.

He started out at Everton but never broke into the first-team at Goodison Park. Instead he joined Walsall as a youngster after loan spells at Gateshead and Stranrear.

Spells at Coventry City, Celtic, Burnley and Southampton have followed for the defender. Nottingham Forest moved to sign him in 2014. He initially moved to the Reds on loan from the Saints and the move was later made permanent.

Fox has since played over 100 times for Forest in his five seasons at the club and is one of their current longest serving players. He has made 20 appearances so far in this campaign but it is yet to be known whether he will sign a new contract.

Wigan are set to let Alex Bruce leave, with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock showing an interest in him, so this could therefore free up a space for new defender to join the club.
