Former Reading and Millwall midfielder makes Australia switch

Former Reading, Bolton Wanderers and Millwall midfielder Jem Karacan has joined Australian side Central Coast Mariners, as announced by their official club website.

The 29-year-old left Millwall at the start of last week and has now signed a deal with the A-League side until the end of the season.

He only joined the Lions in the summer but made just six appearances in all competitions.

Karacan started his career as a youngster with Wimbledon before leaving for Reading in 2003. He broke into the Royals’ first-team in 2008 after impressing during loan spells at AFC Bournemouth and Millwall.

He went onto play 175 games for Reading and scored 12 goals during his time at the Madejski Stadium. He helped them gain promotion to the Premier League in 2012.

Karacan then left Reading in July 2015 and joined Galatasaray on a free transfer. However, his first-team chances were hard to come by with the Turkish giants and he only played 6 times for them. Galatasaray loaned him out to fellow Turkish Super Lig side Bursaspor in the 2015/16 season.

He then left Galatasaray in January 2017 on a free transfer and joined Bolton Wanderers two months later. Karacan helped the Trotters gain promotion to the Championship in his first season and then helped them stay up there in the last campaign.

The Turkish midfielder will now be looking forward to the next chapter of his career with Central Coast Mariners. The Mariners had Usain Bolt training with them last year and had striker Ross McCormack on loan from Aston Villa. They also currently have midfielder Aiden O’Neill on loan from Burnley.
