Five defenders Brentford could sign to replace Chris Mepham

Chris Mepham has left Brentford to join Premier League side AFC Bournemouth. Here are five defenders the Bees could sign to replace him-

Richard Stearman, Sheffield United- The 31-year-old would add some more experience to Brentford’s backline. He is used as back-up by the Blades so an offer of first-team football could persuade him to leave this month.

Liam Lindsay, Barnsley- He would be an ideal replacement for Mepham. The Scottish centre-back is young and has a point to prove in the Championship after Barnsley’s relegation last season. The 23-year-old has previously played for Partick Thistle.

Patrick Bauer, Charlton Athletic- The German defender has impressed for the Addicks in League One over the past two seasons and was linked with a move away in the summer. Could Brentford lure him away from their fellow London side?

Tom Lockyer, Bristol Rovers- He has been on the books of the Pirates since 2011 and has played over 250 games for them already despite being only 24 years-old. The Welshman has also received five caps for the Wales national team and looks ready to make the step up into the Championship now.

Jack Whatmough, Portsmouth- The promising defender has just signed a new deal with high-flying Pompey in the third tier so it will be hard to lure away from Fratton Park. However, he would be perfect for Brentford if they are prepared to spend some of the £12 million they have received from Bournemouth for Mepham.
