Two-time Premier League winning midfielder nearing Middlesbrough move after passing medical

According to GazetteLive, former-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has passed a medical and agreed terms with Middlesbrough ahead of a proposed move.

As reported on The72 earlier this week, Middlesbrough had turned down the opportunity to sign John Obi Mikel who last played his football for Chinese Super League side Tianjin TEDA. The former-Chelsea midfielder has since revisiting Boro’s training complex Rockcliffe Park, and has held productive talks with the clubs hierarchy.

It is understood, the Nigerian international has agreed terms and passed a medical with the Teessiders, and the deal will be announced in due course.

The 31-year old is technically a free agent, after his contract was terminated by Tianjin TEDA at the end of last season, and will cost Middlesbrough nothing in transfer fees.

Mikel reportedly wants to return to England where he had the most successful spell of his career, winning the Premier League trophy both in 2009/10 and 2014/15 under Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho respectively. The Nigerian international also won the UEFA Champions League and Europa League in his 11 years at Stamford Bridge.

He had discussions with both Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace, before deciding on not moving back to London, and instead preferring a move to the North East.

Mikel would be competing with a plethora of midfielders at the club if he was to sign. The likes of Adam Clayton, Jonny Howson, George Saville, Lewis Wing and Mo Besic have all featured heavily this season, not to mention the emergence of Marcus Tavernier and stalwarts Grant Leadbitter and Stewart Downing.
