Middlesbrough interested in signing Fulham midfielder surplus to requirements

According to The Sun (print edition, January 16, page 53) , Middlesbrough are interested in signing Fulham outcast Kevin McDonald on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

The central-midfielder has endured a difficult time at Fulham so far this season, having been limited to just two appearances in the Premier League. However, the club are now willing to let the Scotsman leave West London side, and Middlesbrough look in pole position to snap up a deal this window.

McDonald was a key player in Fulham’s success last year, as they were promoted to the top flight via the Play Offs. But the signings of Jean Michael Seri and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa from Nice and Marseille respectively have seen McDonald fall even further down the pecking order.

Fulham want McDonald to leave on loan, and could be a safety net in case they are relegated come the end of the season. The five time Scotland international could be a vital part of their Championship squad if they are to drop down to the second division.

If Middlesbrough were to seal the deal, the 30-year old would have plenty of competition in a central midfield role. The likes of Adam Clayton, Jonny Howson, Muhamed Besic, George Saville and Lewis Wing are all in rotation in the starting eleven; not to mention club captain Grant Leadbitter who will want to play a part this season, and Marcus Tavernier who has been given more of an opportunity from the academy so far this campaign by manager Tony Pulis.
