Southampton keeping tabs on Brentford duo

Southampton are keeping tabs on Brentford duo Chris Mepham and Ollie Watkins, according to the Daily Mirror live transfer blog (9:39).

The Saints see the highly-rated duo as potential long-term options for them but may have to fork out big transfer fees to land them both.

Mepham, who is 21 years-old, established himself in Brentford’s first-team last season and has made the centre-back spot at Griffin Park his own. His form has attracted plenty of the Premier League interest over the past year or so. He has also received four caps for the Wales national team.

Watkins is another who is the subject of interest from Southampton. He joined the Bees in July 2017 from League Two side Exeter City and has adapted well to life in the Championship.

The 23-year-old forward scored 11 goals in all competitions last season and has managed seven goals so far in this campaign.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford are on good form at the moment but it is inevitable that they will face interest in their key players this month. The London side will be desperate to hold onto the likes of Mepham and Watkins for January at least.

Southampton have a reputation for giving young players a chance and would be a good Premier League club to sign for a young and hungry Championship player. Their new manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, who is formerly of Inglostadt and RB Leipzig, is looking to put his own stamp on the Saints in this transfer window.
