Hull City midfielders star in Championship Team of the Weekend #27

Sky Bet Championship league leaders Leeds United extended their advantage at the top of the table to four points with a 2-0 victory over Derby County at Elland Road on Friday evening.

Hull City extended their winning run in the league to six matches with a convincing 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Norwich City have dropped out of the league’s top two-placed sides for the first time since October after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Sheffield United made the most of the opportunity presented to them, and with a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Bramall Lane, they moved up to second place, their highest league position since November.

Managerless Nottingham Forest suffered after beating league leaders Leeds last time out in the Championship, and after being reduced to nine men, they were beaten 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium by Reading.

Wigan Athletic ended their winless run of eight matches in all competitions to beat Aston Villa 3-0 at the DW Stadium.

Strugglers Ipswich Town returned to winning ways to close the gap on safety to seven points, beating Rotherham United 1-0 at Portman Road.

On a weekend where less than half of the sides in Championship’s top half of the table were victorious, here is who made our Championship Team of the Weekend, based on player ratings from

Formation: 3-4-1-2

Goalkeeper: Dean Gerken (Ipswich Town) 7.39

Defensive solidarity was vital for Ipswich as they got their first win and clean sheet in all competitions in six matches against Rotherham.

Goalkeeper Dean Gerken was a leading figure in that, winning three aerial duels and making two saves to be one of only seven Championship goalkeepers to manage a clean sheet this weekend.

Centre-back: Mason Holgate (West Bromwich Albion) 8.41

West Brom defender Mason Holgate has wasted little time in settling in under Baggies manager Darren Moore since agreeing on a loan switch from Everton.

Holgate created Dwight Gayle’s opening goal in the 12th minute, whilst defensively he was also crucial, winning six tackles and making five clearances.

Centre-back: Pontus Jansson (Leeds United) 8.06

Whilst ‘spy-gate’ dominated the headlines from Leeds’ Friday night win over Derby, the Whites’ Swedish defender Pontus Jansson shone against Frank Lampard’s Rams.

Completing five tackles and making seven clearances, Jansson was at the heart of a Leeds back-line who prevented Derby from scoring for the first time in six matches.

Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson was the highest-rated outfield player at Elland Road.

Centre-back: James Collins (Ipswich Town) 8.30

Former West Ham United defender and Wales international James Collins made an instant impact on his Ipswich debut, helping them to a shutout against the Millers to win the star man accolade in Suffolk.

Collins won the most aerial duels (12) and his staggering total of 17 clearances was only one less than the number managed by the whole of Paul Warne’s visiting side.

Right-midfield: Jarrod Bowen (Hull City) 8.78

It’s beginning to become a little bit predictable for Jarrod Bowen to get a brace and the star man award whenever he plays for Hull City, a feat once again managed by December’s Championship Player of the Month during their 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the KCOM Stadium.

Bowen netted twice in the space of seven minutes against the Owls, the second of which coming from the penalty spot to take his goal tally for the season up to 13, seven of which have come inside his last six appearances.

Jarrod Bowen has scored 13 Championship goals this season for Hull City.

Centre-midfield: Markus Henriksen (Hull City) 8.26

Hull’ Citys in-form winger wasn’t the only Tiger to shine for Nigel Adkins’ side, with Markus Henriksen excelling in the middle of midfield.

With a pass completion rate of 88%, winning six aerial duels, completing five tackles and making three interceptions, Henriksen contributed in so many ways as Hull moved to within four points of the play-off places.

Markus Henriksen also starred for Hull City in their convincing Yorkshire derby victory.

Centre-midfield: Oliver Norwood (Sheffield United) 7.97

As the Blades were 1-0 victors over QPR on home soil, Oliver Norwood’s creative spark lead to Chris Wilder’s side’s fourth consecutive league win.

Norwood created David McGoldrick’s only goal of the game, taking his assist tally for the league campaign up to five, one of his two key passes made during the clash.

Left-midfield: John Swift (Reading) 8.2

Reading boss Jose Gomes got his first win as the Royals’ manager, the club’s first win in 12 as they beat the Tricky Trees 2-0.

John Swift opened the scoring for them in the first half, his first goal since their home win over Birmingham City in August, as well as completing three tackles and two key passes.

John Swift got his first goal in five months for Reading yesterday.

Attacking-midfield: Lewis Wing (Middlesbrough) 8.42

As Middlesbrough earned a 2-1 win at the St Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium over Birmingham yesterday, midfielder Lewis Wing was imperative to their away success.

Wing opened the scoring before half-time with a left-footed strike, before creating substitute Britt Assombalonga’s late winner with just eight minutes remaining.

Lewis Wing was WhoScored’s star man for Middlesbrough in the West Midlands against Birmingham City.

Striker: Matty Taylor (Bristol City) 8.12

Despite featuring for only 28 minutes of regulation time, Bristol City striker and substitute Matty Taylor was the Robins’ hero as they came from behind to beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Ashton Gate.

After coming on in the 62nd minute, Taylor had managed to turn the game on its head in the space of four minutes. He first levelled the tie himself before creating fellow substitute Kasey Palmer’s winning goal five minutes into his debut for Lee Johnson’s side.

Bristol City striker Matty Taylor has three goals and three assists in the Championship this season.

Striker: Joe Nuttall (Blackburn Rovers) 8.25

Blackburn Rovers striker Joe Nuttall got the first of two late goals in the space of a minute as Tony Mowbray’s side were 2-0 winners over Millwall at The Den during Saturday’s evening kick-off.

As well as getting Rovers’ opener, Nuttall won 10 aerial duels and won two tackles as he marked off his first appearance since September with a goal and WhoScored’s star man award in the capital.
