Brentford to face Premier League interest in defender

According to Sun reporter Alan Nixon on Twitter (below), Premier League side Southampton are showing “late interest” in Brentford’s young central defender Chris Mepham.

21-year-old, Hammersmith-born Mepham came up through the youth system at Brentford. His consistent displays have seen a rise in his value, and have obviously brought about interest such as that being shown by the likes of Southampton.

The youngster has featured in 22 Sky Bet Championship games for Brentford during this 2018/19 campaign, contributing the one assist. These 22 games come as part of the 43 Championship games that he has featured in for the Bees since being promoted to the first-team set-up in 2017.

Brentford currently find themselves treading water at the wrong end of the Sky Bet Championship table. They are in 18th place, a 3-1 victory over Stoke City part of a five-match run without a loss.

The Londoners are a side beset with inconsistency, something that Southampton might be looking to exploit with a bid for Mepham.

Financially, the Saints won’t struggle to fund a raid for the young defender – not when you consider the clout behind the Premier League financed cheque book. They can also offer top-tier football to Mepham, who hasn’t been featuring regularly over the last set of games.

With the January market hotting up, this one could well be one to keep an eye on.
