Leeds United midfielder returns to Chelsea five months early

Lewis Baker has been recalled by Chelsea after failing to break into the Leeds United team so far this season. Baker arrived in the summer as the first signing of the Marcelo Bielsa era but like many before him who have come to Leeds United on loan, it has flopped. His forgettable performance on Sunday his final appearance for the club.

Baker arrived with a growing reputation in football. A very successful loan with Dutch side Vitesse had led to him captaining the England under 21 side and moving on loan to fellow Championship club Middlesbrough under ex-Leeds manager Garry Monk. A bit like what happened at Boro, Baker has failed to make an impact in a Leeds shirt, making just two league starts for the club in just over five months. He also failed to impress in the cup games, the only real chance he had under head-coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Baker was highly rated by Leeds when he arrived and certainly by Chelsea who gave him a new long-term deal not long before. Certainly a talented player and one who has much ability but can’t seem to put that on the pitch when given his chances. Bielsa hasn’t spoken much about the player and faces the media ahead of the Derby game this afternoon, he’s more than likely going to have to explain the Leeds point of view on the situation.

It leaves Leeds United even shorter in numbers as the squad continues to face huge obstacles this season. Barry Douglas is the latest injury concern and Patrick Bamford and Izzy Brown are not much closer to a return. Kalvin Phillps has two more games out suspended and the transfer market isn’t exactly something Leeds seem to be full engaged in yet.
