The Sheffield Wednesday striker that could play alongside Wayne Rooney

Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper is a target of two Major League Soccer clubs and teams in China, according to Sky Sports.

The 30-year-old, whose contract runs out at the end of this season, has been linked with DC United and Vancouver Whitecaps, whilst representatives from China are also monitoring the status of the Sheffield Wednesday forward.

Hooper has been struggling with a groin injury throughout this season which has meant he has not featured for the Owls since Boxing Day 2017 and underwent surgery on the issue last November.

He signed for Sheffield Wednesday permanently in January 2016 for £3 million from Norwich City, having spent the previous three months on loan at Hillsborough.

During his time there, he has scored 30 goals in 83 appearances in all competitions for the side who will be managed by Steve Bruce as of the first of February.

Should Hooper move to Washington and sign for DC United, it would see him link up with England’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney, who has spent the past six months stateside and has netted 12 times in 21 appearances for the club.

The other MLS club reportedly chasing the signature of the former Celtic striker is Vancouver, who are in search of a goalscorer, after their top goalscorer from last season, Kei Kamara, who had a brief loan spell at Norwich just months prior to Hooper’s time in East Anglia, left for the Colorado Rapids. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps’ teenage starlet from last season, Alphonso Davies, who netted eight goals for them has signed for Bayern Munich.

A potential stumbling block for any club wanting to sign Hooper is when he will be ready to play again, having missed over 12 months of action. Wednesday’s current assistant manager Steve Agnew confirmed on Saturday that both Hooper and his current teammate Kieran Lee, who are both long-term absentees “are certainly quite a way away”.
