Leeds interest in Hoffenheim winger confirmed

Speculation in the January transfer window is often hot air, but in this case it seems to be genuine. It was just yesterday that Marcelo Bielsa confirmed that the club are keen on bringing a winger to the club and reliable Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay has confirmed the club do want Hoffenheim winger Steven Zuber.

Zuber was linked from German sources late last week and Hay confirmed it was a player Leeds have previously looked at. He has now said the deal could happen and more outlets are reporting the interest. Zuber, a Switzerland international isn’t getting much game-time in the German Bundesliga and Leeds are crying out for a wide player after the departure of Samu Saiz. Pablo Hernandez will now be the central player and that leaves us short of numbers in the wide areas, 18-year-old Jack Clarke the go-to player currently.

Zuber, 27, is a wide player naturally but can play in the back-line as well as wide midfield and further forward. Leeds have now lost Barry Douglas to injury and that could even mean Gjanni Alioksi reverts to a left-back position if Leif Davis isn’t ready for a run in the side yet. The ideal option would be for Tom Pearce to step in but naturally he’s injured, as are half of the team and have been all season.

In terms of quality Zuber is playing at a higher standard than the Championship and he should be able to adapt if the moves does indeed happen. For now it’s just interest but Bielsa seemed confident the club would move for a winger and with reports abroad suggesting this it certainly adds fuel to the fire. It would be a deal that would capture the imaginations of many Leeds United fans and would be a huge boost to all at the club if it happened.
