Reports – Leeds interested in Swiss defender

Leeds United will be looking for players to add to one of the smallest squads in the league this January. Due to injuries Leeds have been using under 23 players for much of the season, still managing to sit top of the pile coming into the new year. The club have now been linked with a move for Swiss defender Steven Zuber.

Leeds currently have just three first-team defenders fit and available, which is more than what the club have had in recent weeks. For around a month Marcelo Bielsa has had just two fit first-team defenders to choose from. Kalvin Phillips, a central midfielder has been playing alongside Pontus Jansson and a mixture of Stuart Dallas, Jamie Shackleton, Leif Davis, Aapo Halme and Barry Douglas have been at full-back, with Luke Ayling returning from injury.

Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi are both longer term injuries which has caused issues, the injury of Luke Ayling also left him on the sidelines for some time and Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t ruled out a move for a defender this month. Although the source of interest is often from abroad it’s hard to know what is legitimate and what’s not in a month like January in terms of Leeds United interest in a player. It was just last week the club were also linked with a move for Hull City Jarrod Bowen.

Leeds certainly need defenders, Zuber would fit the bill. Playing at a good standard and experienced and can play in different positions. We need players ready to come in and play almost straight away now as well. The Izzy Brown situation we knew would take time, but there is no sign of his debut for Leeds United entering the new year and that has to be a concern for the club. Samu Saiz has already departed for Spain and Jamal Blackman returned to Chelsea with a bad injury.

Time will tell whether there is genuine interest here or this is just a January story.
