Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Wolves defender Kortney Hause, according to the Shropshire Star.

The 23-year-old is set to become Dean Smith’s second signing of the January transfer window as he looks to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad. The Midlands side have already acquired goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic from Gent.

Hause has fallen down the pecking order with Wolves over the past couple of seasons. He has played just six times under Nuno Espirito Santo since the start of the last campaign.

He will offer Villa more depth in their defensive options which is a boost for Smith. Villa also recalled Tommy Elphick from his loan deal at Hull City as he aims to tighten up their backline.

Hause rose through the youth ranks at West Ham United before joining Wycombe Wanderers in February 2012. He made his debut for the Chairboys in November 2012 in an FA Cup game against Crewe Alexandra and went onto play a further 30 times for them in League Two as a youngster.

Wolves then swooped to sign him in January 2014 and loaned him out to Gillingham to gain some more first-team experience. Hause then played 68 games for Wolves but has since fallen out of favour.

A move to Aston Villa will be ideal for Hause and is a great opportunity for him to get his career back on track. He is still only 23 so could have a bright future ahead of him at Villa Park.
