Leeds United favourite latest to join the 100 club for Whites

Leeds United haven’t historically kept their best players since being relegated to the Premier League but one of the best to play for us since that day made his 100th appearance for the club in yesterday’s home game. Although it didn’t end very well the bigger picture outweighs an off-day for a side at the top of the table and a player who’s become a fan favourite.

Jansson initially made the switch from Torino to Leeds United on loan, links to the assistant manager at the time, Pep Clotet used to lure the Swedish centre-back. Massimo Cellino sanctioned the move with the agreement of a £3.5 million fee to make the move permanent at the end of the season. Although there was a dispute between the owner taking over Andrea Radrizzani and Torino the fee was paid and Jansson penned a three-year-deal, something that he did after scoring a memorable header at Blackburn.

Garry Monk paired Jansson with another loan player in Kyle Bartley. They were the bedrock of a team who somehow blew what seemed a sure play-off position towards the end of the season, although Jansson and Monk did have issues. Although never revealed Jansson had been left on the bench for two crucial games in which Leeds lost, a rumoured bust-up with Bartley rumoured to be an issue. Jansson had made his mark in England and the deal was done and dusted in the summer, Thomas Christiansen was in as the new head-coach.

It’s fair to say although starting the season well Jansson, like the rest of the team had lost their way by the new year. Between the stubbornness of Christiansen and then the lack of leadership by Paul Heckingbottom the season was blown in dismal style. Jansson had signed a new five-year-deal during the season, a deal that was brilliant for the club and the player, showing intent by Andrea Radrizzani and making sure the clubs sniffing around what is without doubt one of the best centre-backs to play in the Football League since it’s reformation were put-off.

Jansson has resurrected his international career, making appearances in the 2018 World Cup and captaining his national team whilst becoming one of the most popular players in Leeds United’s most recent history. Passion and stacks of ability there is little doubt Jansson is playing below his level in the Championship but there is also little doubt he wants to be playing for Leeds United at a higher level. A match made at Elland Road and Jansson, 100 deep in his Leeds United career.
