Aston Villa linked with another Brentford star as Dean Smith plans raid on former club

Aston Villa are keen to bring in playmaker Romaine Sawyers from Championship rivals Brentford, according to Sky Sports News.

In the run up to the January transfer window, Aston Villa have been heavily linked with Brentford players as Dean Smith looks to reinforce his squad heading into their Championship promotion fight.

The72 reported this morning that defender Yoann Barbet is on Dean Smith’s radar for January. Now, Sky Sports are reporting that Smith is also keen on a reunion with attacking midfielder Romaine Sawyers.

Aston Villa’s rivals West Bromwich Albion were keen to bring in the midfielder when Dean Smith was still in charge of Brentford at the start of last season, but now its seems their West Midlands counterparts Villa are the ones looking to secure the services of the midfielder.

The midfielder made his way through the youth ranks at West Bromwich Albion in the early stages of his career, but made no first team appearances in nine years at The Hawthorns. After brief loan spells with Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town, Sawyers joined Walsall on loan, making his switch permanent in 2013.

The St Kitts and Nevis international enjoyed a thoroughly successful spell with Walsall, playing 161 times for the Saddlers. In that time he scored 19 goals and assisted 25 goals, also making his way into the League One Team of the Season after a successful 2015/16 campaign.

At the end of that season, the playmaker joined Brentford on a free transfer, where he has gone on to play 112 games in an enjoyable spell at Griffin Park.

Since Smith’s departure, the midfielder has maintained his place in Thomas Frank’s side, captaining The Bees on multiple occasions since the appointment of the Dane.
