Middlesbrough interested in swap deal involving £15 million forward

According to an exclusive report by TEAMtalk, Middlesbrough are considering a swap deal involving Boro striker Britt Assombalonga and Crystal Palace forward Connor Wickham.

Britt Assombalonga has dropped down the pecking order at Middlesbrough in recent weeks, with Jordan Hugill making the spot his own. The club’s £15 million record signing could now make way in January to aid Boro’s goal glut, as they aim to bring in a Premier League replacement.

Connor Wickham has been plagued with injuries at Crystal Palace, missing the last two years with a ACL injury, and he could make a move down to the Championship in order to get some well-needed game time. Whether the move to Middlesbrough would be a loan deal or a permament move remains to be seen however, and the deal could also rely on another move happening elsewhere.

According to another report in The Sunday Mirror (December 16, pg. 65), Crystal Palace would only consider selling Wickham if they land a deal for Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe. Palace are short up front with Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew, Alexander Sorloth and Wickham their only out and out strikers.

Wickham has enjoyed successful spells in the Championship previously with the likes of Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town, scoring 22 goals across five campaigns. His most prolific season came at Hillsborough where he netted eight goals in 11 games.

Current Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis attempted to sign Wickham for Crystal Palace back in January 2014, but it wasn’t until the following summer that the striker signed for the Eagles under Alan Pardew, where he has been ever since.
