Swansea City eyeing up January move for Sunderland defender

Swansea City are considering making a move for Sunderland defender Tom Flanagan, according to HITC Sport.

Sunderland’s former Burton Albion defender Tom Flanagan is on the radar of Championship side Swansea City, HITC Sport has revealed.

The defender has been in good form since switching to League One Sunderland from Burton Albion in the Summer transfer window, and Swansea are looking to make his stay at the Stadium of Light a short one, with a January move being lined up.

Since joining Jack Ross’ side after suffering relegation with Burton Albion, Flanagan showed signs of quality in his 15 appearances in all competitions. The Black Cats are yet to lose a game when Flanagan has started, and he has formed a strong partnership with fellow summer arrival Jack Baldwin, who joined from League One promotion rivals Peterborough United.

HITC add that Swansea have been watching Flanagan throughout this season, but are not the only side to be keeping tabs on the 27-year-old. Several clubs have reportedly been keeping an eye on the defender in the midst of his good form this season.

Flanagan spent his youth career at Milton Keynes Dons, along with five years in the senior squad. However, his spell with the League Two side didn’t bring many first team chances, making just 45 appearances in five years. He was sent out on loan on five occasions, spending time with Kettering Town, Gillingham, Barnet, Stevenage and Plymouth Argyle before he was released by MK.

He joined Burton Albion in 2015, where he went on to become a first team player, making 82 appearances for The Brewers.
