“Good cup tie and great atmosphere” – Oldham Athletic fans react to beating Maidstone United in the FA Cup second round

Latics will appear in the third round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2013, following a comfortable win against National League side Maidstone United at the Gallagher Stadium.

Frankie Bunn’s starting eleven consisted of Iversen, Dummigan, Clarke ©, Edmundson, Hunt, Lang, Maouche, Missilou, Nepomuceno, O’Grady, Surridge.

It was a slow start to the game with the only real chance falling to Christopher Missilou, but he smashed way over and into the Latics fans.

Latics took an early lead as club captain Peter Clarke tapped in a well-worked set piece after George Edmundson flicked Gevaro Nepomuceno’s deep free-kick into Clarke’s path to put Latics in front (0-1).

Following this, Sam Surridge nearly doubled the lead, but a brilliant save from Grant Smith denied the striker.

Maidstone’s best chances of the first half came in the final two minutes. Striker Elliott Romain wasted his chance, shooting straight at Daniel Iversen from 12 yards.

Then Jack Powell’s curling free-kick deflected just wide of Daniel Iversen’s goal in stoppage time.

Just after the restart, Maidstone’s stand in captain Jack Paxman managed to clear Sam Surridge’s header off the line.

Elliott Romain found space in the Latics box and he forced a fine save from Daniel Iversen as he saved with his legs.

Chris O’Grady sealed Oldham’s place in the third round of the FA Cup as he beat Will De Havilland with a nice piece of skill before scoring from a tight angle to double the Latics lead (0-2).

Maidstone hit the bar late on through a Jack Paxman freekick, but it was Latics saw the game out and  made it six unbeaten and will appear in the Emirates FA Cup third round.

Attendance 3516 (426 Away).
