Where are the last five players to score four goals in a Championship match

Tammy Abraham’s four-goal haul at Villa Park last night ensured Aston Villa gained a point in what was, quite frankly, a crazy game as they played out a 5-5 draw against Aitor Karanka’s Nottingham Forest side.

Here are the last five players, before Abraham, to score four goals in one match in the second tier:

Leon Clarke: Just last season this feat was achieved. Sheffield United frontman Leon Clark struck four of his 18 goals last season in one outing. Chris Wilder’s promotion-chasers found themselves 1-0 down to relegation-threatened Hull City, through Kamil Grosicki’s strike. Clarke struck four times in 35 minutes to gain his side three points. He was withdrawn for Clayton Donaldson with seconds left, to take the supporters acclaim.

Clarke remains at Sheffield United to this day, he has scored just twice this season but has captained the team on various occasions throughout the campaign.

Odion Ighalo: Back in 2015, Watford were fighting for promotion, and Blackpool were rock-bottom. This nine-goal thriller saw the Seasiders go 2-0 up, with goals from Andrea Orlandi and Steve Davies. Slavisa Jokanokic’s Watford came out in the second-half raring to go. Ighalo struck two goals apiece, either side of goals from Troy Deeney, Matej Vydra and Gabriel Angella, as the Hornets smashed Blackpool 7-2.

Ighalo’s impressive spell at Watford came to an end in 2017, when he was tempted by China’s riches and joined Changchun Yatai. The captain has scored 36 goals in 55 games for the side, who duly suffered relegation from the Super League this year.

Ross McCormack: Perhaps a name you haven’t heard in a while, but one you will have heard a lot of during his time at Leeds United. The Scotland international struck four times in a game, including a brilliant free-kick as the Whites consigned Charlton Athletic to defeat at The Valley. Goals from Cameron Stewart and Johnnie Jackson proved in vain as McCormack hit four of his 53 league goals to move Leeds just outside the top six.

More recently, McCormack is on his third loan spell away from Aston Villa, where he is in Micah Richards territory of not being wanted by the fans. He even assisted Usain Bolt in a friendly for his current side, Central Coast Mariners.

Jesse Lingard: A man who needs no introduction. A member of England’s World Cup 2018 squad and one of Manchester United’s most important players. Warrington-born Lingard, plied his trade in the Championship on a number of occasions as he looked to break into the side. One of these loan spells yielded four goals on his début. Birmingham City raced into a three-nil lead by half-time, with Lingard adding a fourth after the break. Kamil Zayatte’s goal was just a consolation as Terry McDermott praised the on-loan United star.

Now, Lingard is a regular in the side at Old Trafford. He has won three major trophies, scored in two Wembley finals and reached a World Cup semi-final. All by the age of 25.

Craig Davies: September 2012 is as far back as you need to go to find five players who have scored in one game. Craig Davies scored four goals in 19 second-half minutes as Barnsley beat Birmingham City. They were four of his 19 goals in two years at Oakwell as the former Wales international left for Bolton Wanderers at the end of that season.

Now, Davies features in League Two, for high-flyers Mansfield Town. At 32, he still has a lot to offer and is looking to help the Stags to promotion.
