Leeds United target former England youth ‘keeper after missing out on two main targets

Leeds United are in the centre of a goalkeeper crisis, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell suffering with a knee injury just over a week after loanee Jamal Blackman broke his leg in an Under-23s game.

Leeds United were heavily linked with Birmingham City ‘keeper David Stockdale, but he was snapped up on an emergency loan deal by Wycombe Wanderers. Burnley’s Tom Heaton is also on Marcelo Bielsa’s radar, but he will reportedly choose Aston Villa over United in the January window.

With targets being chalked off one by one, the latest ‘keeper to be linked with a move to Elland Road is Rangers’ former England youth international Wes Foderingham. The Express report that the 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at Ibrox after the arrival of Allan McGregor, and could be loaned out in January.

Foderingham has made just four appearances in all competitions so far this season, only one coming in the Scottish Premiership. The Englishman was the number one for Rangers since his arrival from Swindon Town in 2015. However, with first team opportunities limited under Steven Gerrard, the ‘keeper will have to leave the Scottish giants if he wants consistent first team football.

With no senior goalkeeper available to Marcelo Bielsa on Saturday, the Argentine started with 20-year-old Will Huffer in between the sticks, with fellow academy ‘keeper Kamil Miazek on the bench.

However, with Rangers ‘keeper Jak Alnwick on loan at Scunthorpe United, Foderingham is the third-choice shot stopper at Ibrox. An injury to McGregor could put Rangers in a goalkeeper crisis of their own, so Foderingham would have to do some persuading to be allowed to leave in January.

Leeds have also been linked with West Bromwich Albion ‘keeper Jonathan Bond, so Bielsa still has other options available if the Foderingham interest fails to materialise.
