Millwall keeper delighted to shine on return to the starting XI

Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer admitted that he was delighted to have impressed on his return to the starting XI in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at The New Den.

The 25-year-old Walthamstow-born stopper made his first appearance since mid-August for The Lions and pulled off a superb double save to deny both Will Buckley and Jason Lowe from scoring for Wanderers. The second save saw Archer show a great reaction to direct the ball over the bar when the visitors looked certain to score.

There was little that the keeper could do to prevent Mark Beevers’ effort from rolling into the back of the net and all-in-all, it was an assured display by the once-capped Scotland international.

Speaking to The72 after the match, Archer said that he was pleased to have put in a good performance on his return to the side.

“It’s good to be back, it has been a while now” said Archer. “I’ve been working hard to get back in the team.

“Ben (Amos) has been excellent so I’ve had to be patient for my chance but I’d like to think that I’ve took it with both hands.”

Archer’s best moment came early in the first half when he blocked Buckley’s shot before making a world-class stop to deny Lowe. The keeper was quite modest when asked about his contribution.

Archer added “I’m just thankful to help the team out where I can.

“The first one was a block and I tried to make myself big and the second one was an instinctive save.

“I am just happy to help out the team.”

Archer’s good display could now see him retain the number one jersey for Wednesday’s home match with Birmingham City but the player said that he will just take manager Neil Harris’ selection decision on the chin.

“That’s not my call” said Archer when he was quizzed over whether he will be in goal in midweek. “It’s the gaffer who makes those decisions and I respect that.

“If I get selected on Wednesday, then that’s great but if not, it’s back to getting my head down and working hard.”

Archer’s appearance against Bolton Wanderers was just his sixth first team appearance this season.
