Bradford City complete signing of former Premier League midfielder on short-term deal

Bradford City have announced the signing of former Stoke City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers midfielder Karl Henry on a short-term deal.

After his release from Championship side Bolton Wanderers at the end of last season, midfielder Karl Henry has found a new club in the shape of League One strugglers Bradford City.

The deal sees the midfielder join on a two month deal, running through to at least the end of January.

Bradford City have been struggling to find some grit and determination and midfield this season, and the experienced Henry will come in to hopefully provide that for David Hopkin’s side.

35-year-old Henry started his career with Stoke City back in 1999, where he went on to make 98 appearances in seven years, before leaving for Wolves. At Molineux, Henry made a huge 271 appearances, playing as captain for the best part of two and a half seasons in the middle of the park.

Upon the arrival of Kenny Jackett at Wolves, Henry was transfer listed and sold to Queens Park Rangers in 2013. The midfielder played 118 times for The R’s from 2013 to 2017, before switching London for Bolton in Summer 2017. Henry spent one year at Bolton, helping them stay in the Championship with 33 appearances.

Despite the long career, Henry is still relishing the chance for the challenge at valley Parade. He spoke to the club website upon the announcement of the deal.

“I went to Bolton last year in a similar situation and certainly helped them stay up, so, hopefully, I can come and help the boys with what already seems to be the start of a turnaround.

“It is obviously a huge club and one of the things the gaffer said to me was ‘come and play in front of 15,000’. They are expecting around 20,000 this weekend – and for League One that is huge support.

“I have heard a lot of good things about the away fans as well. It is important the supporters are behind us and we have got to do everything on the pitch to make sure they are.

“For me, being in at the bottom at this stage, it is early days. Bradford are not cut adrift – we are not miles apart, it is not a huge mountain to climb.

“We have got to get some wins on the board and tomorrow is massive for the club. When you are down there, everyone you are playing around you becomes that six-pointer.

“One thing that I have gained from these experiences is that it is not the end of the world to be down there in the early part of the season.

“I am very keen. Anybody who knows what I am about knows I am competitive. I am a winner and I want to play games.

“I want to come here, earn a place in the team and help the club get out the relegation zone. If I can earn an extended deal then that is my target.
