Leeds United youngster drops Twitter post – big hint at next Saturday say some

It’s gone beyond a spate, and has developed beyond a rash, the status of injuries at Elland Road at the moment hasn’t reached DefCon5 status…yet…but it is at crisis.

That ‘crisis’ is being felt no more keenly than along the back line; it is here that Leeds United are suffering the most. regular right-back Luke Ayling is out for a while, Gaetano Berardi is out injured and not mooted for a return just yet.

Whilst that is bad enough, things have gotten worse with Swedish international Pontus Jansson also now ruled out with injury. In terms on defensive injuries at Elland Road, the old adage of ‘it never rains, it pours’ springs to mind.

With Marcelo Bielsa running the leanest of lean squads, cover in these circumstances was always going to be stretched. This is compounded by the fact that there is no inter-window loan market, with January looking ever-so-tantalisingly distant.

The answer to these defensive frailties was always going to be that the Whites were going to have to look within, to the Under-23s for help. The saving grace here is that they, under the watchful eye of Carlos Corberan, have been playing the Bielsa way, thus easing the transition that any player needs to make in stepping up to the first-team.

Stepping up needs to happen, and there are players there that are round pegs to fill the round hole left by Jansson’s injury absence. Conor Shaughnessy, now fit again, has appeared there for the first team last season. There’s also highly rated Finland youth international Aapo Halme, whose been playing well in the Under-23s this season.

However, it is the following Twitter post that has some Leeds United fans wondering:

Now, it could just be the fact that Hugo Diaz was feeling the need to post about his work ethic on Twitter – it could be just that. However, he’s not posted ANYTHING since October 14, way beyond anything that could be termed ‘sporadic’. He’s also posted the same picture/message on his Instagram account,

Diaz has been performing week in, week out in the Under-23s, catching the eyes of many Leeds fans who have watched those games. Diaz has made one first-team appearance for the Whites, coming on as a substitute for a 33-minute appearance in a 3-1 loss to Preston North End near the tail-end of last season.

It could be nothing, it likely is. But it could also be a sign that Diaz has been told in advance to get his boots cleaned and studs tightened ready for Saturday’s game against Bristol City at what will be a packed-out Elland Road.
