“Shocking first half but fantastic second” – Oldham Athletic fans react to a 3-1 win against Cambridge United

Jordan Lyden scored a long-range strike from the half way line as Oldham Athletic came from behind to beat Cambridge United at Boundary Park.

Frankie Bunn’s starting eleven consisted of Palmer, Hunt, Clarke ©, Edmundson, Taylor, Dummigan, Gardner, Lyden, Branger-Engone, Lang, Miller.

Cambridge United got off to a perfect start when George Maris smashed in a powerful strike from 25 yards which had Latics keeper Alex Palmer comfortably beaten, only six minutes into the game (0-1).

George Maris should have scored again soon afterwards, he was played through on goal, but he was denied by an excellent low save from Latics goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Latics tried to create an opening as Dan Gardner’s freekick landed to Andy Taylor, but the left-back saw his attempt blocked by Jake Carroll in front of the Cambridge United goal.

Brad Halliday was replaced shortly after half time when the right back felt the consequences of a heavy tackle for Johan Branger-Engone and was replaced by Louis John.

Latics did equalise on 61 minutes when George Edmundson rose highest for a corner delivery and powered a header past Forde from eight yards (1-1).

Moments later goalkeeper David Forde came running out of his goal and gifted the ball to Jordan Lyden who struck home from the half way line (2-1).

Callum Lang quickly rapped up Oldham’s win, he burst into the Cambridge box before crashing a shot in off the post for his third strike in four games (3-1).

It was very much a game of two halves for Latics on the afternoon.
