Five potential candidates to replace John Askey at Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town have sacked John Askey after a difficult start to the season. Here are five potential candidates to replace him-

Gary Bowyer- He left Blackpool after just a game into this season and is available now. The former Blackburn Rovers boss guided the Tangerines to promotion from League Two in 2017 and kept them in League One last season.

Paul Hurst- The 44-year-old got Shrewsbury to the Play-Off final in the last campaign but left over the summer to join Ipswich Town. Having recently been sacked by the Championship side, could Hurst go and finish what he started at New Meadow?

Michael Flynn, Newport County- He has done a very impressive job with League Two side Newport. He kept them up in his first campaign in charge against all odds, guided them to a creditable 11th place finish last season and now his side are 6th.

Paul Heckingbottom- He is another option for the Shrews. The former Barnsley and Leeds United boss knows this division well from when he got the Tykes promoted in 2017. Heckingbottom is out of work now and may have to drop back into League One to get back into management.

Danny Coyne- The former Wales international has been placed in caretaker charge. The 45-year-old could find himself in the running for the full-time job if he impresses in the couple of game he may take charge for.
