Steve McClaren reflects after winning Championship Manager of the Month for October

Queens Park Rangers manager Steve McClaren has won the Championship Manager of the Month award for October, after he guided his side to 13 points out of 15, seeing them rise up the table after a shocking start to the Championship season.

Former England manager McClaren defeated Frank Lampard, Neil Harris and Garry Monk to the award. After a dreadful start to the season in which they lost their first four games, Queens Park Rangers surged up the table in the month of October.

The Hoops picked up 13 points from a possible 15, only dropping points to promotion rivals Derby County in a 1-1 draw. QPR have kept four clean sheets in five games along their way, with on loan attacker Tomer Hemed leading the line and continuing his good form since his arrival from Brighton and Hove Albion.

“I have got to say the response of the players has been good, but the main factor we’ve had such a good October was the staff I have got around me,” McClaren told the Queens Park Rangers club website.

“It is all about people, it is all about players, it is all about staff and the staff have been absolutely magnificent.

“We could have crumbled after four games, but they stuck together, we all did. Matty Gardiner, John Eustace, Gavin Ward, the Sports Science team behind them, the medics who are keeping the players fit and everybody at this training ground, everybody at the stadium, the supporters are all sticking together.”

George Burley – chair of the Manager of the Month panel – praised McClaren and QPR for their turn in fortunes in October.

“QPR have shown the importance of keeping faith in the manager and, after a dreadful start to the season, they have now pushed themselves into the top half of the table,” Burley said.

“Steve made some astute loan signings just before the window closed and that helped him have an unbeaten run of games in October.”
