Tony Mowbray updates Blackburn Rovers fans on David Raya and Charlie Mulgrew’s injury problems

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has provided another update on duo David Raya and Charlie Mulgrew ahead of this weekend’s game with Rotherham.

Rovers ‘keeper David Raya picked up serious facial injuries after a clash late on in their clash with West Bromwich Albion. Raya collided with striker Jay Rodriguez with the striker bearing down on goal. The Spaniard was stretchered off and Mowbray has been waiting on whether Raya will need to have surgery – leading to up to six weeks on the sidelines.

“They are making a decision early this week whether or not he needs an operation on his nose. If they don’t then I think they are confident that he may even be able to play next week with a mask on,” Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“Then we have two weeks after that with the international break.

“So we will make the call this week on whether David is going to play or whether he’s going to have surgery.”

Rovers skipper Charlie Mulgrew was also taken off versus West Brom, after limping off with an injury to his ribs after 15 minutes. It was thought that the Scotsman would return earlier, but there are still concerns about the injury to Mulgrew. The Lancashire Telegraph reported on Mowbray’s quotes ahead of this Saturday:

“Mulgrew is desperate to play but the medical department are keeping him out of the picture at the moment.

“He’s had a couple of scans really. There’s more concern about the closeness of his liver, rather than the ribs themselves.

“We didn’t want to take a chance on him getting another bang on them and it causing him serious problems.

“We will wait and see, he’ll have another scan and then the specialist will decide whether it’s fine or not.”
