Aston Villa set for busy January window as Dean Smith reveals transfer plans

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has revealed that his side are set for a busy January transfer window, with plans already being put in place for the window.

At former club Brentford, Smith’s recruitment was top notch, bringing in young talents from lower leagues and turning them into dangerous Championship quality players. Smith brought in Bees’ star man Ollie Watkins from League Two side Exeter City, and he isn’t the only example of one of Brentford’s smart buys under Smith, Left-back Rico Henry and midfielder Romaine Sawyers were both bought in from Walsall, along with ‘keeper Daniel Bentley who joined from Southend United in 2016.

The reveal of plans for a busy January transfer window are a reason for excitement at Villa Park as Smith lines up new faces.

“We’re going to be looking in the January market for a number of players,” Smith told the Birmingham Mail.

“Between myself, Suso and Christian we have got our heads together and have a plan. We’ll be having further recruitment meetings in the next week or two.

“You don’t get to January 1st and think ‘what do we do now’.

“There’s been a lot of planning and it’s what Suso has been involved in so far. Myself, John and Richard sat down with him and have all put in some good ideas so we’ll move forward with that.

While looking at bringing in new players, Smith hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing some of Villa’s loaned out players back to Villa Park. The likes of defensive duo Tommy Elphick and Mitch Clark could have their recall options triggered when the window opens.

“We’re aware of all the players out on loan,” Smith added.

“Richard and JT have touched base with every player out on loan. Richard went to watch Mitch Clark last Saturday. He also went to watch Tommy play at Hull against Bristol City.

“We’ve got a number of players out on loan and it’s quite prudent of us to make sure we’re in touch with them, and making sure they know they’re still valuable assets to the football club.”
