Aston Villa plotting £8 million move for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder

Aston Villa are eyeing an £8 million move for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan, according to the Daily Mirror.

The new Villa boss Dean Smith is looking to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad in January and is believed to be wanting to bring Bannan back to Villa Park.

The Scottish midfielder has been a consistent performer for Sheffield Wednesday over the past couple of seasons and Villa want him to help turn their season around.

Bannan joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 and has helped them get to the Play-Offs in two of his three full seasons at Hillsborough. He has played over 100 games for the Owls since his move there.

The 28-year-old played for Celtic as a youngster before he moved to England in 2004 to join Villa. Bannan rose through the youth ranks at Villa Park and went onto play 83 games for them in the Premier League. He also enjoyed loan spells at Derby County, Blackpool and Leeds United.

He moved to Crystal Palace in 2013 and spent two seasons playing for them in the top flight before moving to Wednesday two years later. Bannan is now an experienced midfielder and is one who the Owls will not want to lose.

Aston Villa have lost two out of their three games so far under Dean Smith and seem to be lacking that creative spark to win games. Bringing Bannan back to the Midlands would be an impressive signing and he would slot in nicely into their midfield.
