Former Newcastle United, Spurs and Norwich City defender joins Peterborough United

Peterborough United have announced the surprise signing of experienced defender Sebastien Bassong on a short term deal, the club revealed this afternoon.

The Cameroon international has been training with Championship side Queens Park Rangers to maintain his fitness, but the defender has decided to join League One side Peterborough United instead, with the defender’s contract will running through to January 2019.

The 32-year-old has had an impressive career. Before joining Newcastle United in 2008, Bassong came through the youth ranks at French side FC Metz. He only spent one full season with The Magpies before joining Spurs, where he represented the North London side in the Champions League. The defender had an unsuccessful loan spell at Molineux with Wolves before joining Norwich on a permanent basis, where he spent five years – which included a loan spell at Watford.

However, Bassong has been without a club since July 2017 after he was released by The Canaries.

Bassong has become the second former Newcastle United defender to join the London Road side in two seasons, after Steven Taylor joined The Posh for the 2017/18 season, before being deemed surplus to requirements by Steve Evans, resulting in the defender leaving for Wellington Pheonix earlier this Summer.

The defender revealed in an interview with the club’s YouTube channel that he has turned down teams from “sexy destinations” over the past year or so, but is ready to get back to professional football after a long spell out of the game.
