Derby County’s Mason Mount reflects on “unbelievable experience” with England

Derby County playmaker Mason Mount didn’t feature for Gareth Southgate’s England side in their friendlies against Croatia and Spain, but still looks back on it as an “unbelievable experience” with the squad.

In the early stages of his loan spell at Derby County from Chelsea, playmaker Mason Mount has made an impressive start to life at Pride Park, catching the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate as he searches for a new Paul Gascoigne.

“It was an unbelievable experience and I loved every second of it,” Mount told Derby County’s official website.

“I was in and around the squad learning what they do on and off the pitch. There is a lot of preparation goes into everything. It was an unbelievable honour to be involved.

“It was a massive win against Spain. There was a lot of preparation that went into the game. We knew it was going to be tough playing away from home.

“It was a hostile environment but the way we started the game and the way we prepared, it set us up perfectly and the boys were excellent.”

The youngster was one of six new players to be called up to one of the youngest England squads in recent years – with the average age of the squad 24 for the games against Croatia and Spain.

“The overall age of the squad is very low.

“We had a lot of experienced players in there as well but I think with the introduction of younger players as well, there is a good mix. We are all very hungry to succeed.”
