Leeds youngster replaces Real Madrid superstar on international debut

Tyler Roberts has made his first international appearance for the senior Wales squad and how surreal could it was to see him replace Real Madrid star Gareth Bale. Wales thumped Republic of Ireland 4-1 in Cardiff and Roberts was given fifteen minutes to impress by new boss Ryan Giggs.

The start of the UEFA Nations League hasn’t caught the imagination of everyone but to the Welsh and Irish fans it does represent a chance to qualify for the tournament in another way. Being Scottish myself I know that although it isn’t the most appealing of situations its realistic to think this could be the best way in, but I won’t hold my breath.

Roberts wasn’t expected to make the squad under Giggs but was delighted when the news came out. He had played the previous night against Preston North End in the League Cup and that was just his second game of the season. He also started the League Cup win over Bolton Wanderers but struggled after the half-time interval in both games which is to be expected.

In terms of players having to work hard to impress and restart their career Roberts had it all to do. A £2.5 million move from West Brom in January was followed by a cracked shin in training before he even kicked a ball in the first-team. He finally made his debut at Oxford in pre-season and scored a beauty. Last night he replaced one of the best footballers on the planet in Gareth Bale.
