Top 5 average Championship away support this season so far

The guys at EFL Stats have put together a list of the average away attendances by Sky Bet Championship clubs so far. Whilst it may only be six games into the new season, we know how you like to know these things!

It perhaps unfair to assume that certain clubs are more well supported than others at this stage. Take Millwall for example, they have the lowest travelling away support so far, but trips to Blackburn, Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday are hardly local derbies for them! Therefore, we’ll focus on the top five from the Championship.

Surprisingly to some, Leeds United don’t enter the top five, although they are actually top of the cumulative home and away support after six games.

5th) Aston Villa (2,246)

It all started so well on the road for Villa when claiming a 3-1 success at Hull on a Monday night. A frustrating draw to ten man Ipswich Town followed, before a day to forget at the weekend when crashing to a 4-1 loss at Sheffield United. Steve Bruce will want his side to reward their travelling support with more consistency in the future.

4) Nottingham Forest (2,286)

Aitor Karanka’s side are yet to win on their travels so far, but draws at Bristol City and Wigan Athletic are certainly not bad outcomes. A narrow loss at in-form Brentford came at the weekend, but they’ll be winning games on the road sooner rather than later.

3) Bolton Wanderers (2,503)

It may surprise some to see Bolton riding so high in this category. They have started the season very positively, losing once in six. They did recently take a large following to local rivals Preston, where they came from behind to draw. Prior to that, they won on the opening day at West Brom and also a hard-earned success at Reading too.

2) Stoke City (2,682)

It has been a very frustrating start to the campaign by Stoke. The recent home win over Hull may have helped them turn a corner to a degree, but their fortunes on the road have not helped their cause. A draw at Preston was solid enough, but losing at West Brom and Leeds was a shame, even if both are strong opposition.

1) Sheffield Wednesday (2,790)

It is three on the bounce for Sheffield Wednesday, but two of those came at home. Those on their travels were rewarded with a good win at Reading recently, with remains their only victory away so far. They have the honour of being the best supported away side this season so far, also taking big followings to Brentford and Wigan.
