Derby, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa miss out on loan target as midfield starlet joins Eredivisie club

Earlier in the transfer window, it was reported on The 72 that plenty of Championship clubs were in the running to sign highly rated youngster Martin Ødegaard from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The attacking midfielder Martin Ødegaard had reportedly been ‘offered’ to a host of Championship sides including Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Derby County. However, the 19-year old has joined Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem on a season long loan deal today.

The club confirmed the deal on their official website, and conducted an interview with their new signing. He said, “The past year and a half I have played in the Eredivisie. I was impressed by Vitesse. I got to know Vitesse as a good footballing team, with an offensive and dominant view of the game. I think that way of playing is good for me.

“Vitesse has also shown that it gives young players a chance to dare. That is why I am happy with the opportunity that Vitesse offers me.”

He was sent out on loan to Eredivisie side Heerenveen last season, and this will have played into his thinking when choosing his next team for this upcoming campaign.

Ødegaard has played just one game for the Champions League holders Real Madrid since arriving from Norweigen side Stormsgodset in 2015, and at just 19 years old, Ødegaard may not feature for Real still for a number of years. The Championship clubs linked this transfer window could well revisit a deal for the Norway international next summer, if they remain interested.
