Sheffield Wednesday Predicted XI for Carabao Cup match against Sunderland

Tonight’s match for Sheffield Wednesday is actually more interesting than it seems.

Even though it’s a Carabao Cup match between two teams unlikely to get too far in the competition, for the Owls this is a good match for them to get back on track. They’ve opened up their season with a loss and a draw though they did look like they could win in the end in that match against Hull.

So this match against Sunderland is a big one for Wednesday as this is a good game to try and re-establish themselves while testing out a few players who may not get chances usually. But who will and should get the chance?

Here are our thoughts.

GK: Joe Wildsmith

Not much to say on this one. Jos Luhukay has already confirmed that he will be starting in this match and he could use it to prove why he should be number one rather than Cameron Dawson.

CB: Jordan Thorniley

Thorniley came on for Morgan Fox in the match against Hull and really impressed, helping to change the game in the Owls direction. He definitely deserves to start in this game because of that and if he puts another impressive performance in, he might get into the line-up for the game on Sunday against Brentford.

CB: Tom Lees

Of course Lees deserves to be in this match. He’s the captain and a stalwart. The more he plays, the better he is.

CB: Joost Van Aken

Van Aken got off to a rocky start in the match against Wigan and was dropped for the game against Hull, a fair decision in my opinion. But he has talent, there’s a reason everyone fell in love with him last season, and deserves a shot in this game.

RWB: Liam Palmer

This is a similar thing to Van Aken. Palmer was poor against Wigan and was dropped and after his impressive performance, I’d have Ash Baker as the number one in this position right now. But like Van Aken, Palmer should be given this chance to earn his way back into the first team.

LWB: Matt Penney

The cup is a great chance for youngsters and Penney has been waiting a while for his debut. If he had not been loaned out last season he’d have already made his debut and I think he’d work very well in this wing-back role.

CM: Joey Pelupessy

This central midfield has been picked because to be quite honest, I’m not entirely sure whose fit. I’d love to use Almen Abdi and David Jones in this match, especially as the latter scored a cracker against Sunderland last season, but neither have been included in any matchday squad so I’m just going to assume. So let’s give Pelupessy another chance to start, I know he’s been poor but I think he could do well if given another chance.

CM: George Boyd

Now Boyd has been in a matchday squad so I am confident that he is fit and ready to go. He hasn’t started yet but he has a tonne of talent that I don’t want Wednesday to waste. So give him a shot please!

CM: Alex Hunt

Let’s hand another debut to a youngster. Hunt has been one of those players on the cusp and has been on the bench for the last few games. This is an ideal chance for him to get a start and hopefully impress enough to get more starts in the future.

FW: Marco Matias

Like Boyd, Matias is a player with a lot of talent that Wednesday haven’t been able to utilise. A combination of injuries and bad timing has seen Matias’ time at the club being very underwhelming. But the cup is a great time for him to start and show why he came in with so much hype.

ST: Steven Fletcher

Agh, I really wanted to put Lucas Joao in this role. He was great in the second half of last season and deserves a shot but he’s out injured for this one. While I was tempted to give Preslav Borukov a chance, I think he’d be better coming off the bench. Instead, let’s give Fletcher another shot because all he needs to do his get his eye in, which these games are good for.
