Leeds United player ratings vs Bolton Wanderers

Leeds have won their third game on the bounce, a good win over a resolute Bolton side. The game should have been out of sight by half-time, chances missed and eventually the Bolton goal would mean they grew into the second half. There were some good performances, a much-changed side was laid out by Marcelo Bielsa.

Player ratings

Jamal Blackman – 6 – Didn’t have loads to do, could do nothing with the goal but dealt with balls into the box when needed. Spilled one shot, Bolton couldn’t take advantage.

Jamie Shackleton – 7 – Played very well first-half and although he dipped slightly as the game went on and fitness caught up with him he was always willing to move inside and get on the ball, a lovely run and cross should have resulted in a goal.

Pontus Jansson – 6 – Got better as the game went on and seemed to adapt to the pace but early on a few passes went astray and he was turned a couple of times in wide areas. This is, of course to be expected with it being his first game of the season.

Luke Ayling – 6 – The pair dealt with all the long balls as we would expect but they were never fully pushed. Ayling was steady, Jansson bailed him out after a bad pass, but nothing seemed to phase him.

Tom Pearce – 6 – Put in a few good balls and won most of his tackles but was up against a very physical Clayton Donaldson. Dealt with him as best he could.

Kalvin Phillips – 8 – #T72MOTM – The best player on the park for me tonight. Very good on the ball but even better off it. The majority of times Bolton launched a counter attack, especially in the second half, they ran into a brick wall, Kalvin Phillips.

Lewis Baker – 6 – Showed some very good touches but for me he was in and out of the game rather than consistently getting involved. Samu Saiz was the player we went through.

Samu Saiz – 8 – Was the creative spark in the side and on another night he would have had three assists. Bamford and Harrison will be kicking themselves that they didn’t score from lovely Saiz scoops. Back to his best, took his goal brilliantly.

Jack Harrison – 7 – Grew into the game as it went on and looked tricky and sharp. Certainly seems a player with huge potential. Liked to get shots off as well and was very direct. Drifted inside to allow Pearce to get wide.

Tyler Roberts – 5 – After such a long lay-off with injury this game would always be his toughest. Worked very hard but simply couldn’t get into the game at any stage. The ball seemed to come to the left and when it went right it was more Jamie Shackleton. Nothing to worry about, good to get minutes into his legs.

Patrick Bamford – 7 – It was strange to see Bamford because I can’t ever recall seeing a striker like him at Leeds. Plays a very interesting way and seemed to link very well with Saiz. Certainly has goals in him and took his extremely well. Nutmeg and swept past the keeper. Good start, work hard but ran out of steam as Bielsa pointed out.

Gjanni Alioksi – 6 – Tidy on the ball but didn’t get too involved.
