Bradford City lose out in cup game to Macclesfield Town; but positives there to take – fan reactions

Last night Bradford City were knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two side Macclesfield Town on penalties after both clubs failed to find a winner during a 1-1 draw in regular time.

The Silkmen’s return to the competition after a seven-year absence, saw them get past Bradford City in an affair that saw the League One side dominate large periods of the match – in which their share of 59% of possession tells somewhat of a story.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock in the first half, with the Bantams coming unstuck against a somewhat inspired Rhys Taylor in the Silkmen’s goal.

Macclesfield Town took the lead in the cup match, with a header in the 60th minute from Fiacre Kelleher finding the back of the net to give the League Two side the lead.

Bradford City managed a rather impressive 19 shots on goal, with 10 of them landing on target during the game. The only sticking point is though, that only one of them managed to find the back of the net, with Luca Colville’s long-distance striker sending the 447 traveling Bantams fans into raptures.

Despite the fact that Bantams commanded 59% of the possession during the game, they couldn’t find a late winner, with Sherwin Seedorf and Ryan McGowan coming close, but being denied by Taylor.

The Silkmen’s shot-stopper then performed heroics in the penalty shootout, denying both Anthony O’Connor and Joe Riley from the spot, giving the Silkmen a 4-2 victory in the shoutout, and booking their name in the hat for next rounds draw.

Reactions

Bantams fans were somewhat disappointed with the result, as the club failed to make it past the first round of the competition for the fourth year in a row.

Naturally, the fact that the club didn’t break down the Silkmen in regular-time was frustrating for both players and fans, but Bantams boss Michael Collins insisted that there were positives to take.

Collins spoke to Pulse 2 Radio and said:

“Tonight we’ve not got the result, but the performance gives me a lot of heart to build from, but I saw a lot of positives individually and collectively”…

…”I saw a lot more positives in that performance than I did off the back of the Shrewsbury win or the Barnsley game at the weekend”

Most Bantams fans were naturally disappointed with the result and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations after missing out on a potential money-spinning second-round tie:

But there was an air of positivity from some Bantams fans:
