West Brom told they must pay £7m to sign Rangers defender

West Bromwich Albion have been told that they must pay £7m if they want to sign Rangers’ James Tavernier according to a report from TeamTalk.

The 26-year-old defender played for the youth systems of Farsley Celtic and Leeds United before landing at Newcastle United. He struggled to break into the first team there, instead having to get first-team action on loans at teams such as Rotherham United, Carlisle United and Gateshead. But with first-team football at Newcastle looking unlikely, headed to Wigan Athletic and got some action there as well as at another loan, this time at Bristol City. Since 2015 though he has been at Rangers.

Tavernier is now one of Rangers’ star players and he is their club captain going into the new season. Their new head coach Steven Gerrard sees him as a key player and is desperate to keep him as they want to have a chance at wrestling the Scottish Premier League title away from their fierce rivals Celtic. That means the interest from West Brom is totally unwanted and they have rejected their bid, said to be worth £3m, completely out of hand.

But if West Brom want to sign Tavernier before the end of Deadline Day at 5pm, they have been told how much they will have to pay. Rangers have placed a £7m valuation on him, more than double than what West Brom have bidded for him. Whether the Baggies will go in for him at that price remains to be seen, especially as reports have now suggested that they are in for Leeds United’s Luke Ayling.
