Swansea City defender to move to Newcastle United – big shock

In a surprise deal, Newcastle United might well have somehow managed to force through a deal to sign Swansea City’s central defender Federico Fernandez – despite the fact that Swansea have tried to remain as resilient as possible over any potential sale for the centre-back.

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon has tweeted the following:

NEWCASTLE. Looks like a Fernandez agreement can be reached and a deal sorted fast. Benitez frustration over. Online tale shortly.

This would indicate that Rafael Benitez’ Newcastle United have managed to come to some form of agreement over a potential transfer for Federico Fernandez, despite the fact that Swansea had more-or-less suggested that they didn’t want to sell the defender for less than £10m, according to WalesOnline.

Newcastle United have made signing a centre-back an absolute priority, after the club’s defender Florian Lejeune injured himself, leaving the club somewhat short in the defensive department.

The Magpies have made a relatively significant profit during this transfer window; which would suggest that the club have the funds there, to bring Fernandez to St. James’ Park – but whether the Premier League side are happy to part with the cash they’ve made during this transfer window, remains to be seen, with Rafael Benitez showing disappointment before about Newcastle’s lack of ambition in the transfer market.

If Newcastle United’s supposed bid has been accepted by Swansea City for Federico Fernandez, it would leave the Welsh club noticeably short at centre-half after losing Kyle Bartley, Alfie Mawson and potentially Fernandez. This could suggest the club have a replacement in mind, and are prepared to splash any potential cash that they get from a sale of their defender.
