Two Championship clubs meet midfielders release clause – are Leeds United or West Brom one of them?

Leeds United have been interested in Peterborough United midfielder Maddison for quite some time and with Reading, Derby County, West Brom and Aston Villa all supposedly interested in signing the winger, it will be an interesting 24 hours to see if the midfielder moves to the Championship – and what club will secure his signature – after two Championship sides have reportedly met his £2.5m release clause.

Maddison has been fantastic for Peterborough United over the past few seasons and can play in a number of positions, either as an attacking midfielder, a winger or a left-back. Namely, though, Maddison is an attacker and could fill a void in Leeds United’s side, deputizing as a winger or a secondary striker to whoever the West-Yorkshire club decide to sign during this transfer window.

Leeds United would be a club which you’d expect to be chasing Maddison, especially with the fact that Marcelo Bielsa has taken over at Elland Road and the Argentinian is a huge fan of open, attacking, expansive football. It’s likely that Maddison is still on Leeds United’s radar and with the arrival of the Argentinian and a healthy budget, Leeds could easily convince Maddison to join up at Elland Road and could offer the financial incentives to Peterborough to feel that they could let the attacker leave London Road.

Marcus Maddison is hot property and his future destination remains uncertain but it seems he won’t be sticking with Peterborough United into next season, with the levels of interest that have been shown in the winger – it’s a shame for Peterborough who also lost Jack Marriott in this transfer window; but a great coup for whoever gets Maddison for such a cheap price.
