Portsmouth complete loan deal for QPR winger

Portsmouth have signed David Wheeler on loan from QPR for the season as confirmed by the club website.

The 27-year-old winger started his career at Brighton and Hove Albion never made an appearance for them and was soon released. That meant he had to go to non-league football to get his chance. He would play for Lewes and then Staines Town before being spotted by Exeter in 2013 and was signed up by them. Wheeler would go on to make over 100 appearances for the Grecians, helping as they pushed for promotion from Sky Bet League Two, before being signed by QPR last season.

Wheeler struggled with injuries at QPR which limited his first-team opportunities and with recently appointed head coach Steve McClaren not seeing a spot for him in the first team, he decided to let him leave on loan. And while a number of clubs were reportedly interested in signing Wheeler when he became available, it was Portsmouth who were able to get his signature.

After the move was completed, Portsmouth head coach Kenny Jackett said: He’s an attacking wide player, who can be used on either side and has an impressive goalscoring record.”

“He hasn’t quite made the breakthrough at QPR, but had a number of seasons at Exeter and was very keen to come here.”

“It’s our first loan signing and supplements the good base of our own players that is already here.”

“He’s an attacking wide player, who can be used on either side and has an impressive goalscoring record.”

“We’re pleased to bring his attacking qualities into our group and are grateful to QPR for letting him come here.”
